Artist Statement

Mary R. Hollinger

I am a retired social worker living in Middleton, Wisconsin.  In 2008, after 30 years working in the field of social work, I was ready to get involved in a new kind of work.  Art is the longtime interest I turned to.

Artistic as a child, I studied art for 4 years at my high school in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.  Having raised my two children in Madison, and having completed my MSSW program at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Social Work, I moved to Florida with my husband Brian.  After qualifying for social work licensure and finding work in the field, I started taking evening or weekend art courses wherever I could find them.  I took life-drawing courses at the Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, and later studied with an excellent teacher of “Realism in Oils” at the St. Petersburg Arts Center in St. Pete, Florida.

Since returning to the Madison area in 2013, I’ve taken many art classes offered through UW’s excellent continuing studies program.  Great teachers and classes have helped me work in various mediums, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, and pastels.
